Kanzi is a Bonobo, he lives at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa. As a child Kanzi spontaneously acquired language whilst observing scientists work with his mother. National Geographic reported in March 2008, that 'by the age of 27 Kanzi "talks" with an excess of 360 keyboard symbols and understands thousands of spoken words.'

On one occasion, as recalled by primatologist Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, who has studied Kanzi for many years, during an outing in the woods, Kanzi touched the symbols for "marshmallows" and "fire". "Given matches and marshmallows, Kanzi snapped twigs for a fire, lit them with the matches and toasted the marshmallows on a stick".
The Telegraph has published photographs showing Kanzi lighting a fire and cooking.
